Korea strictly prohibits somatic cell nuclear transfer experiments between humans and animals
The amendments to the Bioethics Act, which was drafted by the Korean government on the 30th, strictly prohibit the somatic cell nuclear transfer test between humans and animals. The new amendment will be implemented in 2008 after it is approved by the National Assembly.
The amendment prohibits the implantation of animal cells into human eggs and the implantation of human nuclei into animal eggs, as well as the fusion of genetic material between cells from different providers. However, the prohibition order does not include the already completed stem cell nuclear transfer experiment between humans and animals. A person from the South Korean government said that the laws on stem cells and stem cell nuclear transfer will be further improved next year.
According to the new amendment, the ongoing human stem cell research project for the treatment and prevention of human diseases can still be carried out in accordance with the current approval process, only through the bioethics review committee of the research institution. However, the newly established human stem cell research project needs to be approved by the Korea Ministry of Health and Welfare.
South Korean media said that the government's ban on somatic cell nuclear transfer would cause controversy in the life sciences. The Korean life sciences community believes that at this stage, the transplantation of human somatic cell nuclei into the eggs of cattle, pigs and other animals is still an important experimental method to enhance human understanding of the physiological and pathological understanding of embryonic stem cells.
South Korea's "Korean Daily" quoted an expert as saying that in the field of therapeutic research on human stem cells, animal eggs are an essential alternative research method because it is difficult to obtain sufficient human eggs for testing.
The Korean government has always taken a positive support for stem cell research. However, the research results of former Seoul National University professor Huang Yuxi were found to be fraudulent. The way Huang's research team obtained eggs also triggered a series of ethical controversies in Korean society.
