Whether the crime is deliberate, the brain image is swept away

Release date: 2017-03-22

Recently, neuroscientists from all over the world are trying to uncover the secrets of the human brain through images. This is not a simple task. After all, the human brain is the most complicated thing in the world, no one, and it is difficult to decipher. However, researchers have found that by analyzing the image of the brain, it can be shown whether a person is intentionally or unintentionally at the time of the crime. Although this may seem like a small difference, it can have a major impact on the offender's sentencing in court.

The US law, the judgment of the subjective will of criminal suspects, is a very important consideration in the sentencing of privacy, intentional crimes and negligent crimes, the degree of punishment varies greatly. More precisely, the suspect's behavior is characterized as intentional, definite, reckless or negligent, and the final punishment and sentencing ruling has a great influence.

"When all other things are the same and the crime results are the same, depending on the psychological differences in the crime, there will be a significantly different judgment result of 14 years of imprisonment or probation," said Dr. Montgull, a neurologist at Virginia Tech University. "Whether it is tilted between deliberate and negligent, it determines whether you still have freedom in the future."

Montague and his team scanned the brains of more than 40 people and used machine learning algorithms to study the images to determine if the investigators knew they had committed guilt.

All participants were given a test and everyone would carry a suitcase through the border security. And in these suitcases, according to different probabilities, illegal drugs may appear, and some people know that some people do not know, and this can be used to distinguish whether the brain changes intentionally. By scanning the brain, the researchers are able to determine which ones are “knowingly committed” and some simply because they do not understand or because of negligence.

The study, published last week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows the state of mind and brain state under different consciousness. Although the study is still in the laboratory stage, the future of the brain may be one of the grounds for judging criminal liability of criminal suspects by scanning certain parts of the brain.
